Why Not Me the World podcast released a special series to commemorate the start of Autism Acceptance Month in April. New daily episodes were broadcast during the month of April where podcast Host & Producer Tony Mantor did a deep dive with a diverse group of Scholars, Judges, Lawmakers, Attorneys, Therapists, and Law Enforcement Officers about autistic individuals' experience with law enforcement and the legal system. They shared their unique experiences and perspectives to give insights on how we as a society can improve the legal system for everyone.
“The series purpose is to refrain from assigning blame, and instead focus on developing solution driven strategies,” Mantor said about the new podcast series. “I just think we need to do more to acknowledge and be empathetic enough to find solutions on how the justice system deals with autism or other mental health issues, versus just arresting them and treating them as criminals. Not only here in the United States, but worldwide.”
A subsequent special series was broadcast in May, focusing on mental health, with varying topics and subject matter experts from other mental health disciplines, to also raise awareness about mental health in the context of the legal system. Real life stories were recounted and shared by individuals who’ve engaged with the legal system.
“Through these special episodes, we hope to gain a better understanding of the obstacles faced by individuals with autism and mental health conditions when interacting with the legal system,” Mantor said. “Please join us to demonstrate solidarity in supporting those who require inclusivity and assistance throughout this process they may be facing.”
